Finding a positive outcome from a negative situation can have a huge healing effect. Hannah Wells, owner of the Craftea Day company recently did this, with the One Big Craftea Charity Day, after two close friends were diagnosed with cancer. Deciding to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, she drew on her craft credentials and in collaboration with Rachael Adams from the Social Butterfly and a whole host of local craft companies, the event went ahead at the end of September.
Being a craft fan – and having raised money for Marie Curie myself – I had to stop by, say hello and spend some pennies. I was very glad I did.
With gorgeous kitsch items from Reconsidered Retro, through to exquisite scarves and handkerchieves from Amy Stubbs, it had something for everyone. I bought myself some little bits and pieces, oohh-ed over beautifully sewn purses from Panda Perdu (well I do need a new one), bought some earrings from Jopp Design and talked to Sarah Hill from Freda and Me about crochet and how to update an old jumper or cardigan with a little crochet.
I was blown away by the pieces on display from Vinegar and Brown Paper – I know several of my more scientific friends would love some of their pieces for Christmas (yes, the c-word) – let alone the pint pot for MrGFB. I also spotted some possible presents at Opal Gems – beautiful pieces of sea glass – as such, completely unique and one of a kind.
Finally a quick visit to the bake-off section to admire the entries and a purchase or two from Chezzie le Choux (Jack Daniels cupcake anyone?) and I had to head off home. Bags full of a few little lovelies, I only wish I could have spent more time – and money – there.
I do hope that Rachael and Hannah hold more of these events around Manchester – they’re a great way to raise money for charity, offer workshops and items for sale and with Christmas creeping ever closer, ideal for one off presents and stocking fillers alike.
