World’s Biggest Coffee Morning: MacMillan Cancer Care

I think we all know someone who’s had cancer, don’t we? When I ran the Race for Life earlier this year, it became clear I knew far too many – family, friends, work colleagues. Some battled and won, some  fought and lost.

For all too many, it’s the care surrounding their treatment that makes it bearable – for the family as well as the patient. It’s someone to turn to, someone to talk to, someone who won’t judge, but who can help, support and advise. And that’s where MacMillan Cancer Support (as well as, I hasten to add a lot of other excellent charities I’ve supported) come in.

Tomorrow is their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and there are various events on across Manchester to help support them.

My local shopping centre, Stretford Mall, has events on in The Hive and Cooperative Travel Agency, the University (home to my day job) has a whole range of events on in different Schools and departments. Cake is everywhere.

One of the biggest is in the Merseyway Shopping Centre in Stockport. So big in fact, that it’s over two days. Their Family FUNdraiser looks like a fantastic way to spend the weekend, whether you’re a fan of compere Kiki deVille, X Factor Finalist Sam Callahan or Britain’s Got Talent’s Harry Mondryk.

Personally, I think I may be hunting up Fireman Sam instead. Who doesn’t like a man in uniform?

Everything kicks off with the Coffee Morning on Friday, with coffee demonstrations, bake sale,  and kids activities and is free to attend and of course, all donations going to MacMillan.

Away from the event it’self, I’ve already done my bit. I’ve linked three of my recipes below, the cost for the ingredients of which I’ve donated to fellow blogger Food Nerd’s Virtual Bake Sale – or a rough guestimate rounded up anyway.

Given I’m heading into training again (and may have been stuffing my face at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival all week) virtual cake is probably the better option for my waistline.

Not So Jamaican Ginger Cake (booze, ginger, sugar. It’s all good).
