Hard Seltzers are all the rage. Light, fresh, low in alcohol. They offer something canned for the no and low market
That said, they’re not to everyone’s taste. If you’re expecting something bouncing with flavour, then these aren’t for you. Think gently flavoured fizzy water with a spirit (often vodka or gin) – something like a very light lime and soda. But for those watching their weight, or those who prefer something light in general alcohol or refreshing flavour wise, these will definitely hit the spot.
And this is exactly what these cans from Sol Duc are. I managed (thanks to a giveaway in their Instagram) to get my hands on a selection to sample of all three flavours. The name comes from a water fall in Washington State, USA, whilst the brand itself is Aston Manor – those behind Frosty Jacks and Kingstone Press Ciders.
We’ve got the background, what about the drinks themselves? There are three flavours to choose from Strawberry and Lime, Rhubarb and Ginger, and Raspberry and Rose. The branding screams freshness and summer. Which is a shame because they were released in September and it’s now October.
Flavour wise? Let’s dive in.
The strawberry and Lime is gives a wash of strawberry fruit, the lime and acidity from the strawberry hit on on the finish, the floral notes linger on the finish.
With the rhubarb and ginger, there are hints of rhubarb and custard to this one, with the ginger biting on the finish. It’s the most prominent of the three and probably my favourite.
Finally, raspberry and rose. There’s a gentle berry acidity, soft hints of rose. If anything, I’d have preferred a little bit more rose to it, but you can still enjoy both flavours.
