Coming back to ‘normal’ has featured some amazing moments. Heading into the office my first day back on campus. Seeing my colleagues and students in person. The first press event back.
And one of the best moments? Perching at a bar.
It’s long been one of my favourite places. I can perch with a drink and a book. I can people watch. Or I can sit with a friend and have a drink and a gossip, all the while my gaze watching the bartenders craft and create and serve.
Finding myself perched at Schofield’s Bar was absolute bliss. Not only was I at a bar. I was inside. And in a classic style bar, owned by two local lads, Joe and Daniel.
It’s one of the latest openings in the city centre, and as I mentioned, the bar is classic in style – in keeping with the building itself on Little Quay Street. The service is impeccable. That careful blend of attentive and enthusiastic, without being over gushy or intrusive.

The cocktail menu features plenty of classics. Martinis. The Clover Club is one of the best I’ve had in a long time.
And then there is the addition of some of their own creations, like the Olive Grove. The flavours of a Martini, in a longer, refreshing drink.

I don’t mind admitting, I’m a bit in love. It’s my favourite kind of cocktail bar, the kind where I can just sit, drink and while away time over a Martini or two. No fuss. No frills or furbelows. Simply well crafted drinks, attentive service, and a breadth of knowledge that means on quiet day, I know I’ll be able to chat booze with the staff.

And now you know if you ever need to find me, where I’ll probably be.
