Shopping for your body shape can be a pain in the backside. No, I don’t mean that ‘apple’, or ‘pear’ bullsh*t, we’re not pieces of fruit. I mean looking for what you like and what suits you.
Anyone can wear anything they like, but only you know what you like and what makes you look the way that you like to look.
And I generally know what I like. I’ve a big backside and chunky thighs and I’m not afraid to use them. So for me, it’s tight pencil skirts, and shift dresses, with the odd flippy skirt thrown in. I love bright colours, and though my bust isn’t big, I put it to good use, with deep v-necklines. My rule has always been: if you’ve got it, flaunt it. And if you haven’t got it, flaunt it anyway.
But every so often, I like to step out of my comfort zone – try something new. Look at colours I wouldn’t normally consider. And that’s what inadvertently happened when Lovedrobe asked me to review some pieces from their website.
Lovedrobe have been around for quite some time, catering to sizes from 16 to 30. Tops, jackets, dresses, there’s a great range to choose from, but I must admit to struggle to find pieces that were the usual ‘me’ style. So I decided not to. And try something completely different.
Instead of leaping for bright blues and reds, I instead opted for a few quieter pieces. Like this waterfall jacket in a black and nude check (size 18). It’s actually become a bit of a staple in my wardrobe as it’s quieter tones go with just about everything I own. Even the brightest brights.
It’s easy to wear, and even better (because I’m lazy) doesn’t need ironing. Ever. Which also makes it perfect for travelling because it doesn’t crease. It even has me eyeing their safari jackets as their stronger colours would be perfect for matching with a little black dress. Or a little blue one. Or a little green one.
I then chose two tops – both versions of this batwing top (size 16). Their pearlescent shimmer attracted me and though they weren’t my go to tones, or even shape, I dove in anyway. And whilst I was initially unsure, I was actually pleasantly surprised.
My last memories of the dropped waist trend had me backing off, but I was surprised at how good this looked – it’s sheer nature meant that it’s a bit sexier than you think.
And again, no ironing. These tops wash and dry super fast, so another couple of pieces to add to the travel wardrobe for when food and drink has me hopping on a train.
Not every foray out of the usual is successful. I can somewhat fondly remember my flares period in the nineties (I’m too short in the leg to pull them off. Forget flare, they barely fla before the floor cuts them off in their prime.
But this time…. I think I need to step into the unknown a little more often.
