In a side street near Earl’s Court, lies Evans & Peel Dectective Agency.
You need to make an appointment to visit and behind the door, there’s a room transported from a 1930s film noir, complete with brass lamp, book shelf, typewriter and a chap ready to discuss your case.
In our case we were curious. A friend had moved to London and deserted her Manchester friends, only to be difficult to pin down and distracted. She was supposed to meet us, but had been delayed and we wondered if this was going to be another missed opportunity.
We asked for the detective’s help. We wanted to find her, and being out of our depth in London, we needed aid. It’s a vast place, and we were looking for one person.
Could he help? Would he help?
Thankfully yes. The detective aided us, our friend was found and we were ushered into the inner sanctum of the agency. To the cocktail bar.
I’d like to introduce you to something that’s not yet been mastered in Manchester. The Speakeasy. Done well, it’s a beautiful thing of fantasy and excitement. There are hints of one opening in the next few months, but I’m reserving judgement for now.
I can’t say any more, that’s confidential, but until someone in Manchester sets up their own speakeasy agency, I’ll be taking my cases to London.
