Gaucho has long been known for its meat. Almost as much as it’s known for its decor – any venue with chairs sporting cowhide is going to catch your attention, and stick in your memory.
But, though I’ve judged Pen to Shaker twice at the bar, it’s always seemed a bit lacking. More like an afterthought. As you walked in, walls of sleek black cupboards greeted you and at the back of the entrance, the bar was functional, but that was it.
Not any more.
At a launch party that saw the place crammed with people, Gaucho showed off it’s revamped space. And my it’s shiny.
I don’t know how they’ve found the space, but gone are the long sleek black cupboards, that made it feel more like a storage area, and instead there’s glitzy lighting, booths with black studded leather and a very well stocked bar.
There’s even a new sound system and space for a DJ for party nights, and like a lot of bars in the city, they’ve also installed bifolding windows, bringing the outside in for the summer time. It also provides a nice more informal setting for lunch, as opposed to the more formal restaurant, relaxed, despite the obvious dazzle.
If glitz, glamour and all that sparkles is your thing, you’re going to love it.
And whilst the majority of attendees at the launch sipped fizz, I spotted something a little more my cup of tea. Or should that be glass of gin? I do love a nice big Langley’s G&T.
I’m also really intrigued by the hints at their new like of Argentinian cocktails, and the new wall of wine separating the two spaces – restaurant and bar – looks like a oenophile’s dream.
Whilst for me, it’s not an everyday destination, at least now it feels like I can add it to my list of bars to visit in the early evening, rather than it just being a dinner venue.
