Those of you who know me, know I’m a big advocate of the pencil skirt, even as a plus size woman. I like something that clings, skimms my curves. I have a big bottom and I’m not afraid to use it.
But this year, I seem to have gone all…. pouffy. It started with a green skirt from Joanie Clothing, and now with a blue satin number from JD Williams.
Now I know what some of you are thinking. JD Williams is for the, er, older lady. I’m going to argue the point for the other side – not only because when I was a much larger size than I am now, JD Williams plus size range was one of the only plus size brands out there that offered something other than a tent for you to wear, and not only because they also have brands like Coast, Scarlett & Jo and Joe Brown’s, but because sometimes, you can’t beat a classic.
And classic doesn’t always have to be styled in a classic way.
So we start with a classic pairing. The skirt is a dull navy satin, with a net underskirt. I paired it with a navy bag, and a plain baby blue cardigan.
From a fitting perspective, JD Williams is generous, and I should have remembered this and ordered a size down in both items – lesson learned for when I get the black version of this skirt!
As they are, with a pair of heels, and a fancy hat, you’ve got a simple wedding outfit, something perfect for a second wedding, beautifully comfy and as a clutch bag is never big enough, the skirt also has generous pockets. Ass it’s so pouffy, the pockets don’t spoil the line of it, so if you need a hip flask of gin, you’re sorted.
But even in a more contemporary styling, I’ve fallen in love with this skirt so much, getting it off me, it proving a bit of a challenge.
I love it with this jacket – a recent New Look purchase I’ve also fallen head over heels for – and some comfy shoes. Once it gets a bit warmer, I know it’ll be easy to wear with wedges and a little camisole, or with flipflops and a tshirt.
The cardigan too has seen some love.
Sure the size 16/18 is a little big, but actually it works for casual so well. Yes, the jacket was out again, along with a pair of New Look jeans that almost fit (I still have the whole big butt little waist issue, but these actually stay up), pumps and a scarf. The cotton of the cardigan means you’re warm but not overly so, and it’ll be great as a cover up in the summer for chilly nights.
Now I’m off to do a little shopping – as I want the black version of this skirt before it goes completely out of stock, and I’ve a slew of second weddings this year that might need a new outfit.
Just don’t tell the bride about my hip flask, eh?

Loving the jacket! I’d never think to go JD williams for clothing I always assumed they were more ‘mature’ but that skirt is adorable! (Also sneak one in full of fireball whiskey and I’ll keep my gob shut )
