One of the biggest battles I have is with my weight. It’s one of the reasons I exercise so much and, despite eating out often, will spend my lunch hours chewing on a salad or roast veggies.
One of the things I deny myself most are snacks – we don’t have them in the house. No biscuits, no sweeties, no crisps. And it’s the latter I miss most of all. I’m particularly partial to Walkers Cheese and Onion, preferably with a slice or two of Warburton’s Toastie spread with a bit of margarine. It’s a treat from my childhood that I still love now – but unless I’m racing, they’re a big no-no.
So when Walkers sent me this little monkey in the post (his name is Monty by the way), I was intrigued. What are Walkers doing differently and, most importantly, were they going to taste good?
Reading through the information, it’s clear that they’re keen on wholegrain – and cite a 2005 study which states that 27% of young people aged 4-18 don’t consume any at all. Quite a scary statistic.
But, these are about me personally and my diet choices. The calories are quite low, 85 calories per packet; the carbohydrate high as you’d expect and the fat reasonable at just under 6%. If you’re calorie counting, they’re a pretty low treat.
So what about taste? Being given the roast beef flavour, I had high hopes. I rather like the salty, slightly umami flavour you get. Yes, I know it’s flavouring and not the real thing, but I like cheap and cheerful as much as I like the real deal – just like I love a fake flavoured strawberry milkshake as much as I like a fresh strawberry daiquiri. So what did I get?
Monster Munch. It’s just the same as eating roast beef Monster Munch, same flavour and texture, but higher wholegrain, lower fat and fewer calories. With my scales wincing a bit at the moment, something tasty and light is a definite consideration.
It’s marketed at children, but this would be great for me, as an occasional fix when I need something that’s just a teeny bit naughty – even if it does mean my trainer will make me do extra burpees…
But you won’t tell him… will you?

I saw these in a shop the other day and thought they looked good. If they taste just like their monster munch counterpart, but with fewer calories it would be rude to say no 😉

I was really surprised tbh, I was expecting polystyrene or similar, but they’re pretty good!
