Soreen is 75 years old.
Yes, that little slice of sticky, fruity, malt goodness your mum handed you when you got in from school, or that you got on a Sunday afternoon with bread and butter round at your nan’s is now three quarters of a century old. And to celebrate, they’ve made it a little bit naughtier. They’ve added chocolate.
Soreen’s one of my carb loading treats ahead of an intensive run – for me it’s normally the banana loaf (when I can get it). Or the apple and sultana. Or the toastie loaf covered in melting butter…
So when a big paper bag appeared with some of their limited edition chocolate loaves inside, along with the massively generous pile of goodies pictured above, I got a little giddy and immediately put the kettle on and reached in the fridge for the stash of real butter I keep hidden for emergencies.
To be honest, I was a little unsure. I have rules with chocolate, and putting it in something like this is usually a big no-no in my book.
But rules are meant to be broken, right?
Good. Because this is gorgeous. It’s still the sticky, sweet, fruity malt loaf, but now it has a darker deeper richness to it. Add in little chocolate chips and stuff the kids. This stuff’s for the grown ups – this is sexy.
It’s so good that Mr GFB finished the loaves for me before I could take pictures and I had to get more. Given this stuff is disappearing as fast as places can get it in, this was a challenge in itself.
I’m now keeping it hidden – I’ve the Great Manchester Run to do and I’m very tempted to do it in my new Soreen T-shirt…
I’m a lean mean squidgy machine after all…

I’m a lean mean squidgy machine too – at least that’s what it says on my T shirt! But I haven’t managed to get hold of the chocolate one yet … perhaps he’ll bring some next weekend! Got a fab vintage handbag for the wedding – if she’s a very good girl, a Finn may have it soon …!
I have it on very good authority it will be heading into most supermarkets in the next week or so, but perhaps a word in the right ear….?
I’ll look forward to pictures of the bag – or the details from our mutual Finnish friend 🙂
I like soreen, it looks good on my head and i like to cuddle it grrrrr
