A year and a half is perhaps an odd birthday to celebrate, but if the Queen can have two, The Whiskey Jar can certainly have an extra one just because.
There was live music, cocktails and whisk(e)y. I certainly wasn’t going to complain – neither did my fellow guests as we attended The Next Batch, a look forward to a new cocktail menu, even new pie (hmmm pie) on the food menu. It was time for the staff to say thank you to their customers and for us to toast the coming 12 months.
I can’t believe it’s been so long since my first visit. I can remember being very excited at a new whisky spot opening – I love the Briton’s Protection, but it was the only one I knew, and while I love to sit in there and drink a half with a little glass of something special, it was past time Manchester needed a new bar, a little fresh blood.
And it’s been great. I know it’s a spot I can pop in, grab myself a pie (maybe mash and gravy too) and sip myself something delicious – cocktail, neat whisky, or a lovely bourbon from the collection on their shelves. It was my first port of call for something whisky shaped on World Whisky Day, unsurprisingly!
I spotted an extra little sampling from Greg at Jameson’s Whiskey and sampled some new fruit lagers from Freddies – I hope to do some serious reviewing of those little pretties later.
While we were beautifully serenaded, my date and I hit the cocktails. The Boulvardier seems to be making a bit of a comeback in Manchester’s bars and The Whiskey Jar is no exception. A twist on a Negroni, it’s substitutes Bourbon for gin, making it slightly softer than it’s cousin. As a confirmed ‘hard hitter’ drinker, it’s on my list of favourites and one I’ll be returning for.
The New York Sour from their Cocktails in the City bar is now on the menu too – a twist on the classic sour, this uses Rittenhouse 100 Rye Whiskey is and topped with a red wine float. Delicious.
We were also treated to a little shot of Licor 43 – a sweet, vanilla and citrus Spanish liqueur, that was topped with single cream, so that it resembled a tiny tot of beer.
I’m a sucker for something cute. Speaking of which….
