Following my return from holiday and subsequent hellish working week, this Friday I yet again enlisted the assistance of Claire for drinking purposes and headed out to relieve the stress that returning to the office always seems to create.
Having an innate fondness for rum, music and dancing – we were more than happy to head to the same place as it seemed the rest of Manchester was, the opening of Revolucion de Cuba. Despite a large queue, we were soon inside investigating Manchester’s newest bar, granita cocktail in hand.
Upstairs, it’s much more geared towards food, with plenty of seating: booths, large tables and an excellent menu. For us, the fun definitely lay downstairs – with a good size dance floor and live band, the atmosphere pulled us in.
We soon ventured (with Claire doing most of my drinking) onto other cocktails – the Vanilla Swizzle, the Mad Hatter and we had a teapot of Fruit Salad punch (a steal at £16 for a teapot to share between 2-4 people).
What added to the evening was the crowd, it’s one of those venues that has universal appeal – not only in age range, but it’s idea for those heading out clubbing, people heading out after work or those just not wanting to head home yet.
The music continued into the night and we having been treated to the Mariachi band and the beauties that were in carnival costume, some of the customers downstairs were in the mood to show off their dancing prowess. Whilst some were more adept than others, both Claire and I ended up sufficiently jealous of the ladies’ dancing partners that we now feel a sincere need to source our own (offers on a postcard please).
Claire was exceptionally happy with her straw hat, given away by a generous member of staff, whilst I was rather happier to pin down two of the gents from the Mariachi band for a picture and obliging they were too.
All in all, it ticks all the boxes – good food, good drink, good atmosphere. The only drawback, is that for me it’s missing a little character, a little soul. I’m hoping that will develop in time.
Meantime, I’m going to head back with a dance partner as soon as I can.
